Medevac industry is working to improve services
Regarding USA TODAY's misleading article "Medevac industry resisting upgrades," I'd like to address the limitations of the years-long regulatory process and what has been done to make medevac transport safer (News, Aug. 19).

Travis Given shudders to think what life in Northern Ontario would be like without a reliable transport medicine service.
A flight paramedic with ORNGE, Givens said it can mean the difference between life and death for patients in many far North communities, whose access to quality medical care would be severely hampered through isolation and the absence of doctors, equipment and supplies.

On Thursday, Aug. 19, that's exactly what Randy Pimentel of Sutter Creek had to witness. Yet, as the blaring pound of the chopper's C30 engines began kicking gusts of dirt and garbage into the air, until Pimentel had to shield his eyes, the father knew CALSTAR would be racing through the skies to help his little girl at lightening speed.

Duck smashes into hospital helicopter, which safely makes a quick landing
Kansas City, MO
A wood duck slammed into a LifeFlight Eagle helicopter 2,000 feet up in the air Wednesday night, breaking out a large section of windshield.
Flight paramedic Kent Shutt heard a loud pop, then felt air rushing through the aircraft as it flew about 150 mph through the dark sky above the eastern edge of Kansas City.
The helicopter shook, just for a split second, as the impact startled the pilot, Shutt said Thursday.
